Navratri vrat meal plan

You can lose weight during Navratri by eating three planned vrat meals a day instead of fried snacks, and by building each meal around paneer, curd, milk, makhana or peanuts. The 9-day plan below gives about 1,350–1,475 kcal and 49–64 g protein a day, using only common vrat foods.

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on 11 October. For many people the nine days of fasting end up adding weight, not losing it. Sabudana vada, kuttu puri, aloo tikki and sweets are all fried or starchy, and vrat meals are usually low in protein — so you feel hungry and snack more.

This plan fixes both problems. It keeps to vrat rules followed in most North Indian homes and puts a protein food in every meal. It also covers Ashtami prasad, so the plan still works on the day you're eating halwa-puri.

Navratri vrat food list

Vrat rules differ between families and regions, so follow your own tradition. This is the list most North Indian households use.

The key point for weight loss: the vrat staples (sabudana, potato, singhara, samak) are mostly starch. The protein has to come from the dairy and nut column, every meal.

Ashtami, other fasting styles, and safety

Ashtami / Navami prasad. Kanya pujan prasad (puri, halwa, kala chana) is part of the festival, so enjoy it. Have one portion with the family rather than refilling, keep the other meals that day light, and the week stays on track. Day 8 of the plan already accounts for this.

If you eat only once a day. Make that meal count: a protein base (100 g paneer or 200 g curd), a measured starch (2 kuttu or rajgira roti, or 1.5 katori samak rice), and a vegetable. Through the day, have fruit, milk or chaas so you don't arrive at the meal starving.

If you eat only fruit and milk (phalahar). Have at least 500 ml milk or curd a day plus 3–4 fruits, and a handful of nuts. Without them, protein can drop below 20 g a day.

Drink enough. Aim for 2.5–3 litres of water, chaas, nimbu pani or coconut water a day. October afternoons in North India are still warm, and headaches during a fast are often from dehydration.

Check with your doctor first if you: have diabetes (especially on insulin or sulfonylureas, which can cause low sugar while fasting), are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney disease, take blood-pressure medicines, or have a history of fainting. Sabudana and potato raise blood sugar quickly; pair them with curd, paneer or peanuts.

9-day shopping list (1 person)

Buy the dry items once; get paneer, curd and vegetables in two trips (day 1 and day 5) so they stay fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I lose weight during Navratri fasting?

Yes, if you eat planned meals instead of fried vrat snacks. At about 1,350–1,475 kcal a day, most people lose 0.5–1 kg over the nine days — some of it water, which returns once regular grains come back.

How do I get protein during a Navratri fast?

Without dal, protein comes from paneer, curd, milk, makhana, peanuts, almonds and rajgira. Put one of these in every meal: 100 g paneer gives about 18 g protein, a 150 g bowl of curd about 5 g, and a 250 ml glass of milk about 8 g.

Is sabudana good for weight loss?

Sabudana is almost pure starch with very little protein or fibre, so it fills you briefly and raises blood sugar fast. Have it at most every other day, in a measured portion (about 40 g dry), with peanuts and curd.

Which vrat flour is healthiest: kuttu, singhara or rajgira?

Kuttu and rajgira have more protein and fibre than singhara. Use them for rotis and chillas; keep singhara for occasional use.

Can diabetics fast during Navratri?

Some can, but only after checking with their doctor — especially if they take insulin or sulfonylurea tablets, which can cause dangerous low sugar while fasting. Avoid long gaps without food and pair starches with protein.

What should I eat after Navratri ends?

Go back to regular meals gradually. Start with light dal-rice or khichdi and curd on the first day, and avoid a heavy fried meal the moment the fast ends.
