1600 Calorie Indian Diet Plan: Veg & Non-Veg Full Day
A full 1,600 kcal Indian day with about 70 g protein (88 g non-veg), in rotis and katoris, plus a week of meals and easy swaps.
A 1,600 calorie Indian diet plan gives you 4 phulkas, 2 katoris of dal or chole, paneer, milk and curd, plenty of sabzi, a fruit and a healthy snack each day. That's about 1,600 kcal and 70 g protein on the vegetarian day, or about 88 g if you add eggs and chicken. For active women and less active men, it's a weight-loss level that doesn't leave you hungry.
Below you'll find a full vegetarian day, a simple non-veg version, a week of meal ideas, and the mistakes that most often push people over 1,600 without noticing.
Who is 1,600 calories right for?
You are… | What 1,600 kcal does |
|---|---|
An active woman (gym, sport, on your feet all day) | Steady weight loss |
A less active man | Steady weight loss |
A less active woman who finds 1,500 too hard | Slower but easier weight loss |
A smaller, less active woman | Close to maintenance, so weight stays about the same |
If you're hungry all the time on 1,500 kcal, 1,600 is often the better target, because a plan you can stick to beats a faster one you quit. Most very active men need more; see the 1800 calorie Indian diet plan.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a medical condition, ask your doctor before changing how much you eat.

A full 1,600 calorie vegetarian Indian day
A phulka here is a small, oil-free roti made from 25 g atta, and a katori is a 150 ml bowl. Milk and curd are toned.
Meal | What to eat | ≈ kcal | ≈ Protein |
|---|---|---|---|
Breakfast (8 am) | Vegetable oats upma (40 g oats, peas, carrot, 1 tbsp peanuts, 1 tsp oil) + 1 glass milk (200 ml), no sugar | 395 | 15 g |
Mid-morning (11 am) | 1 apple or 1 bowl papaya + 10 almonds | 125 | 3.5 g |
Lunch (1:30 pm) | 2 phulka + 1 katori chole + 1 katori sabzi (1 tsp oil) + 1 bowl cucumber raita + salad | 490 | 21 g |
Evening (5 pm) | 1 small bowl dry-roasted makhana (20 g) + 1 cup chai, no sugar | 130 | 5 g |
Dinner (8:30 pm) | 2 phulka + 1 katori moong dal + 1 katori palak paneer (50 g paneer, 1 tsp oil) | 475 | 25 g |
Total | ≈1,610 | ≈70 g |
The day in food groups
Cereals: about 140 g raw (4 phulkas + oats)
Pulses: about 60 g (chole and moong dal)
Dairy: about 450 ml milk, curd and chai, plus 50 g paneer
Vegetables: about 400 g (upma vegetables, sabzi, salad, palak)
Fruit: 1 serving
Nuts and seeds: about 22 g (peanuts, almonds), plus makhana as a snack
Oil: 3 tsp in total
Tips for this day
Oats upma keeps you full till lunch. Oats have more fibre than poha or suji, so they suit a mid-calorie plan well.
Roast makhana dry, or with ¼ tsp ghee. Packaged "masala makhana" can have 3–4 times the fat.
Want rice? Swap 1 phulka at lunch for ½ katori cooked rice.
Non-veg version
Eat eggs or chicken? Make two swaps and keep the rest of the day the same.
Meal | Swap to | Change |
|---|---|---|
Breakfast | 2-egg vegetable omelette (1 tsp oil) + 1 slice whole-wheat toast + 1 glass milk (200 ml) | About the same calories, +7 g protein |
Dinner | 2 phulka + home-style chicken curry (120 g raw boneless breast, 1 tsp oil) + 1 katori palak sabzi | About 50 kcal fewer, +11 g protein |
New day total | ≈1,570 kcal · ≈88 g protein |
Fish option: use 120 g rohu, surmai or pomfret in place of chicken. Calories stay about the same, with a little less protein.
Eggetarian option: replace the chicken with 2 boiled eggs in a light egg curry. That's about 1,570 kcal and 74 g protein.

Mistakes that push you over 1,600 without noticing
Liquid calories. A glass of mango shake, sweet lassi or packaged juice can be 200–300 kcal and won't fill you up. Stick to chaas, nimbu pani without sugar, or plain water.
"Diet" snacks. Baked namkeen, multigrain chips and "digestive" biscuits are still 450–500 kcal per 100 g. Check the label.
Late-night snacking. A handful of namkeen or biscuits after dinner adds 100–200 kcal a night, which can cancel most of a week's deficit.
Portion creep. After a few weeks, rotis get bigger and katoris fuller. Measure again every 2–3 weeks.
Weekend breakfasts. One aloo paratha with butter can be 350–450 kcal, about a whole meal's budget. Keep it to one paratha with curd and little oil.
Ghee on top. A teaspoon on each roti or dal adds up fast. Count it in your 3 tsp.

FAQ
Is 1,600 calories good for weight loss?
For active women and less active men, yes. It creates a moderate deficit for most, so weight comes off steadily without constant hunger. EZMeal can confirm your exact target from your age, height, weight and activity.
How much weight will I lose on 1,600 calories a day?
Most people at a moderate deficit lose about 0.25–0.5 kg a week. The first week often shows more, from water. The bigger your usual intake, the faster the early loss.
1,500 or 1,600 calories: which should I choose?
If you're losing steadily on 1,500 and feel fine, stay there. If you're hungry, tired or keep breaking the plan, 1,600 is usually easier to stick to, and sticking to it matters more than the extra 100 kcal.
Is 1,600 calories enough for a man?
For a man with a desk job who wants to lose weight, often yes. Active men, or men who train hard, usually do better on the 1800 calorie Indian diet plan.
How much protein should I eat on 1,600 calories?
The vegetarian day here gives about 70 g, and the non-veg version about 88 g. ICMR-NIN suggests 0.83 g per kg of body weight for healthy adults as a minimum; more helps protect muscle while losing weight.
Can I follow this plan on a South Indian diet?
Yes. Swap the oats upma for 3 idli with sambar, use rice and sambar at lunch, and have ragi dosa with paneer or egg at dinner. Keep the portions similar.
