Healthy Indian Breakfasts Under 300 Calories

The best healthy Indian breakfasts for weight loss stay under 300 kcal and still give 10 g of protein or more: moong dal or besan chilla, pesarattu, vegetable oats upma, sprouts poha, idli with sambar, a low-oil paneer paratha with curd, or eggs with toast. The 15 options below all come in under 300 kcal, with calories, protein and prep time for each, and full recipes for six.

What makes a breakfast "healthy" for weight loss?

  • Under about 300 kcal. That leaves room in a 1,200–1,800 kcal day for two proper meals and a snack.

  • 10 g protein or more. Protein keeps you full until lunch. Most poha, upma and bread breakfasts have only 5–7 g.

  • Some fibre: vegetables, whole grains, dal or oats. Fibre slows digestion, so you don't get hungry by 11 am.

  • Measured oil. One extra teaspoon of oil or ghee adds 45 kcal, so most of these use ½–1 tsp.

If you're not trying to lose weight, or you train hard, these work as a base. Double the portion or add a glass of milk.

  • Batter on Sunday: moong chilla and pesarattu batter keep for a day; idli and dosa batter for 3–4 days in the fridge.

  • Boil eggs in a batch: 6 at a time, kept in the fridge in their shells.

  • Chop once: onion, tomato and capsicum in a box for 2–3 days of poha, upma and chilla.

Breakfast mistakes that undo weight loss

  1. Skipping breakfast, then overeating later. For many people, a skipped breakfast becomes a samosa at 11 or a big lunch. If you're not hungry early, have something small like eggs, curd or a sattu drink.

  2. "Healthy" cereals and granola. Many packaged cereals and granolas are high in sugar and low in protein. A bowl with milk can be 300+ kcal with only 7 g protein.

  3. Low-protein breakfasts. Plain poha, upma, bread-jam and toast are mostly carbs, so you're hungry by mid-morning. Add sprouts, peanuts, paneer, curd or eggs.

  4. Butter and ghee on top. A spoon of butter on a paratha adds 70–100 kcal. Cook with a measured teaspoon instead.

  5. Sugar in chai and coffee. Two sugary cups with breakfast add about 80 kcal. Cut down gradually.

  6. Juice instead of fruit. A glass of juice has the sugar of 2–3 fruits without the fibre. Eat the fruit whole.
